Delta to add DTW to Hong Kong

Delta Air Lines plans to add new nonstop service from Detroit Metro Airport to Hong Kong and Seoul, South Korea, making good on its promise to transform its second-largest hub into a gateway to Asia.

Starting in June, Delta will offer five nonstop flights a week to both Hong Kong and Seoul. In addition, the airline, which merged with Northwest Airlines a year ago, will begin offering daily nonstop flights to Shanghai, China, up from five flights a week.

The new and expanded service are part of the first summer flight schedule that integrates the operations of Delta and Northwest.

"Detroit has a great position geographically for travel to and from Asia," said Delta spokesman Kent Landers.

Metro Airport officials have been lobbying to gain direct flights to Seoul, its largest international market without nonstop service. Northwest did operate direct flights from Detroit to Seoul from 1988 to 1998.

The airport has never had nonstop service to Hong Kong.

Delta also said Tuesday it once again plans to offer seasonal service next year from Detroit to Rome and Amsterdam.
