Thousands come to London Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival 2009Secretary of State for Trade and Economic Development Office Mrs. Rita Lau as thousands enjoyed the London Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in London, the Thames and helped raise money for charity Chinese in London. Mrs Lau attended the London Hong Kong Dragon boat festival at the close of her visit to London (June 26-28) to explore ways of cooperating in the creative industries.

Londoners of all nationalities enjoyed the London Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival 2009, at the London Regatta Center at the Royal Albert Dock today (June 28, London time).

The event was organized by the London Chinatown Chinese Association, the London Chinatown Lions Club and the Hong Kong Club and is managed by executives of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, London.

And a full day of racing with 42 teams, the organization that raises money for five local Chinese organizations.

Teams of rowers from companies and public sector organizations - many in fancy dress - Competition in the 200m heats on the course.

Secretary of State for Trade and Economic Development Mrs Rita Lau, said: "I am delighted to be here at the London Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival and see so many people having fun and learning about Hong Kong.

"Hong Kong is a small place, but is a popular stage for world-class sporting events, like the Hong Kong Sevens and the equestrian events of the Beijing Olympics last year. This December we are going to host the 5th East Asian Games for the first time, and next year Hong Kong will have the honour of hosting the International Dragon Boat Festival - we look forward to welcoming UK boat teams and visitors for this great sporting event."

For the viewers - and rowers between races - it was an afternoon of cultural performances including lion dance, dragon, Kung Fu and live music and food, market stalls and playground.
