Police in Hong Kong say they have charged a man over one of a series of acid attacks in the territory.

He is one of two suspects arrested on Wednesday over an attack in December in which the corrosive liquid was thrown on crowds in a busy shopping district.

The other suspect has been released. The attack, in Causeway Bay, burned five women and a man.

At least six similar attacks in a year have injured more than 100 people. The latest, on Saturday, hurt 30 people.

In that attack, two bottles of acid were hurled into the busy Temple Street night market in Kowloon.

Police identified the suspect only by his surname Lo. The charge of throwing corrosive liquid with an intent to injure carries a maximum life sentence.

Police senior superintendant Yu Tat-chung said the 23-year-old suspect's motives were not clear. He said there was no evidence he might have been involved in the other attacks.

The other suspect, an 18-year-old, was released on bail.
