Japanese film wins at the Asian Film Awards in Hong KongJapanese cinema triumphed in the Asian Film Awards last night, with three Japanese Dramas - Tokyo Sonata, Still Walking and Departures - clinching four of the top prizes.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Tokyo Sonata went with the best film and best screenplay; Hirokazu Kore-eda, the prize for best director and Still Walking Motoki Masahiro scooped best actor for the Oscar-winning run.

Best actress went to China's Zhou Xun for Cao Baoping is the equation of love and death, while the best newcomer went to the Chinese actress Yu Shaoqun who plays Mei Lanfang in new Chen Kaige's biopic Forever enthusiastic.

Koran's Jung Woo-Sung, picked up best actor for suppporting Kim Jee-Woon's The Good, The Bad, The Weird - this was the favorite to be included in the prices of eight nominations. Filipina actress Gina Pareno the best supporting actress for her role in Brillante Mendoza service.

Best Cinematography went to Jola Dylewska for Tulpan, Hong Kong Daniel Lee has the best production designer for Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon, and the best editor went Kim Sun-min for Korean thriller The Chaser. Craig Hayes was best visual effects on John Woo's Red Cliff.

Japan has also reached in the technical categories with Joe Hisaishi of the best composer for his work on hit animation Hiyao Miyazaki Ponyo On The Cliff By The Sea.

All three of the other winners at the Japanese AFAs have a range of prices in the past year - Tokyo Sonata its awards haul by winning the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard at Cannes last year, Still Walking has prices in San Sebastian and Mar del Plata, during take-off was the surprise winner of best foreign language film at the Academy Awards this year.

Hong Kong actress Michelle Yeoh headed the 13-person jury for this year’s AFAs, which also included festival programmers Noah Cowan (Toronto), Christian Jeune (Cannes), Christophe Terhechte (Berlin) and Jacob Wong (Hong Kong).
