"Agoda launches Guide to the Hong Kong Summer Spectacular | AboutHK.Com - More Information About HK"
Agoda, Asia’s global hotel booking site and part of Nasdaq-listed Priceline.com, has compiled a great guide to the Hong Kong Summer Spectacular, supported by special rates at select Hong Kong hotels.

The Hong Kong Summer Spectacular is an annual festival that celebrates the diverse aspects of Hong Kong's culture and traditions. From June 11 to August 31, the vibrant city overflows with special events, from fashion sales and food festivals, to cultural shows and dragon boat races.

Events take place across several iconic Hong Kong locations: Lan Kwai Fong hosts a Beer & Food Festival, Lantau Island's Ngong Ping Village features kung fu feats performed by Shaolin masters, and the shimmering Victoria Harbor forms the arena for the annual Dragon Boat Carnival.

Like Hong Kong itself, the Summer Spectacular has something for every traveler. This year’s program is so crammed with exciting events that Agoda has compiled a "Guide to the Hong Kong Summer Spectacular" to help visitors navigate the array of experiences on offer. Included are Agoda’s best Hong Kong hotel rates, so travelers can enjoy great savings along with a fantastic holiday.

AGODA GUIDE TO THE HONG KONG SUMMER SPECTACULAR

FOR FOODIES

Hong Kong is a food-lover's paradise. Cantonese dishes, such as barbecued pork and century eggs, are available year-round, but during the Summer Spectacular, there's the opportunity to indulge in festive specialties and promotions, which run from June through August. The gastronomic journey culminates in a Food Expo held in the AsiaWorld-Expo center near Hong Kong airport, from August 12-16. The Lan Kwai Fong Beer & Food Festival from June 17-18 offers a chance to sample the best international brews in Hong Kong’s premier party zone.

FOR SHOPPERS

No trip to Hong Kong is complete without browsing Central's luxury stores or bargain hunting on the streets of Mongkok. The Sensational Summer Sales come into effect during the Hong Kong Summer Spectacular, and teamed with Hong Kong’s tax-free status, they offer a great opportunity for travelers to upgrade to the latest fashions, phones, and electrical gadgets.

FOR MUSIC LOVERS

Both classical and contemporary tastes are catered to throughout the spectacular. The Chinese Opera Festival brings traditional Chinese theater to the city from June 4 to July 21. The festival includes talks and symposiums and is held in several different venues. For something entirely different, travelers can hang out at the Summer Pop – Live in Hong Kong concert, a two-day event, which takes place at the AsiaWorld-Expo center and features an all-star line-up of international pop stars.

FOR FAMILIES

This year, the Stitch and Friends Summer Hangout special at Hong Kong Disneyland gives kids large and small the chance to meet Stitch and cool off with the Waterworks Parade. For thrills on Hong Kong Island, families can head to Ocean Park with its rides, wildlife exhibitions, and shows. During the Summer Splash promotion (July 1 to August 31), the park will feature two giant waterslides. Families looking for a cultural exchange can enjoy the International Arts Carnival (July 9 to August 15), which boasts a program of theater productions, multimedia, and more.

FOR SPORTS FANS

The most exciting event of the Hong Kong Summer Spectacular may well be the dragon boat races. Celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, which falls on June 16 this year, the Tuen Ng Festival commemorates the poet Qu Yuan’s death. Dragon boat displays are staged in several locations and are followed by a three-day Dragon Boat Carnival in July. The carnival is an international event held from July 23-25 and features teams from around the world.

FOR GEEKS

Introspective travelers are also taken care of, with the Hong Kong Book Fair running from July 21-27, the 12th Ani-com & Games Expo from July 30 to August 3, and the Hong Kong Computer & Communications Festival from August 20- 23. All three events are staged in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island, just a few minutes' walk from the Star Ferry drop-off point at Wan Chai pier.

FOR CINEPHILES

The Summer International Film Festival, or SIFF, takes place from August 17 to September 13. Screenings attract a hip young crowd of moviegoers with more than 30 films, ranging from Bollywood extravaganzas to indie flicks. Both international and Asian movies fill the month-long roster.

FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT

Check out Shaolin masters showing off their kung fu skills at Ngong Ping Village (July 24 to August 15), the Insect Chorus at Wetlands Park (until the end of October), and women’s volleyball at the 2010 FIVB World Grand Prim, from August 20-22.
